II. GRAMMAIRE : LE SUPERLATIF

Définition

Le superlatif sert à comparer un élément à tous les autres : le plus… / le moins…

the + adjectif court + -est → the tallest, the biggest, the oldest
the + most + adjectif long → the most famous, the most exciting

Exemples

New York is the biggest city in the USA.

Times Square is one of the most famous places in New York.

This is the tallest building in the picture.

Méthode pas à pas

Repérer l’adjectif : tall, big, famous…
Choisir la forme : adjectif court → -est ; adjectif long → most.
Ne pas oublier the devant le superlatif.
Ajouter le complément si besoin : in New York, of the five boroughs…

Erreurs fréquentes

biggest : on double le g.
On écrit the tallest, pas tallest seul dans cet usage scolaire.
Ne pas confondre comparatif et superlatif : bigger than ≠ the biggest.

Ellis Island welcomed millions of immigrants in the past.
Central Park is a very large park in Manhattan.
Times Square is famous for its lights and giant screens.
People often use the subway to travel around the city.
